i’ve gotten so many texts, dm’s, views, reposts, likes and comments about the video i posted from GHOE – the greatest homecoming on earth (bless yourself and go next year; it’s nov. 3, 2018). who knew posting brianna’s fierceness would go viral; like 1.7+ million views viral. this sista and her black girl magic have been featured on bossip, the shaderoom and bet! to say i’m happy for her is an understatement – do your thing! in an instagram posts, she replied with two words – thank you – and i got it. this video is about her but it’s for me.
i love jill scott. on the song prepared from her album woman, jill sings, “i been reading my old journals checking to see where my head has been.” i’ve been doing the same. at 10:04pm on nov. 7, 2016 i sat down, pulled out my journals from 1994, dug into the 928 notes in my phone and started writing a book. it’s been nerving, fun but most importantly, necessary. while editing, my cousin reminded me, “you’re writing to reach, not to please.” he’s right. and that’s why this video going viral is for me. to know (and own as a friend and his mom told me) that something i shared literally reached millions. i pray my book does the same. it’ll be about me then. and i hope it’s for anyone that reads it.
i’ve been listening to john coltrane’s giant steps lately. i’m taking them, too. it’s reminded me to never doubt your doing. so much has been. so much will be. and for that, i’m pleased.
